Travel delays are Uschi Karnatnever fun, but spare a thought for those travelling through Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport.

The airport experienced an extended power outage which lasted from early afternoon through to the night on Sunday, forcing a ground stop on flights headed to Atlanta, with planes mid-flight diverted to alternative airports.

Dozens of flights had landed in Atlanta as the blackout occurred, with some forced to spend hours on the tarmac as they waited for crews to take passengers off via stairs.

It was the case for CNN'sBetsy Klein, who tweeted her experience of spending seven hours stuck in a Delta airplane.

Inside the airport, it wasn't entirely clear who was in charge of the situation.

And there were people sleeping on baggage claim belts.

Ellen Carmichael tweeted on a flight which was 10.5 hours long, and spent nearly an additional six hours stranded on the runway before she was finally able to deplane.

Others also shared their predicament online, with the lack of food becoming a problem.

In a time of seat back screens, one plane used live entertainment to keep spirits up.

All power has been fully restored to the airport, and all passengers have now been deplaned. The City of Atlanta will allow travellers to stay at the Georgia International Convention Center for the night and Chick-Fil-A will provide food.

Yes, unbelievably, on a Sunday.
